The Richard Ratcliff Book

With the help of many relatives, my father wrote a detailed book listing thousands of Ratcliff cousins and ancestors. That book, titled Richard Ratcliff of Lancashire, England and Talbot County, Maryland, is now out of print. However, it is available without cost by viewing a file from this page.

The file is about 150 pages in length, so it may take awhile to load on your computer. This version of the book include revisions Dad made after the last edition of the book was released in 1988. An addendum is also available with Richard Ratcliff's ancestors back to the time of William the Conqueror, provided by the late Wayne Ratcliff.

How to View the Book

You may print one copy of this file and maintain another copy on your computer. However, please do not sell any of these files or printed copies. The book DOES have a copyright.

To view the file, click on the title below. When you are finished reading (or saving the file), click on the "back" icon of your program (it may be called something else on your web browser)--so you return to this page. These are pdf files that require Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded without charge at www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

How to Search for Names and Locations in the Book

After you have clicked on one of the above links and downloaded the book (this may take a few minutes if you have a dialup connection), you can search for names or places that may connect with your ancestors. You can do this by clicking on the picture of binoculars near the top of the page. This will load a empty square, probably in a new right column of the page. Type the location or name into the box, then choose options if you wish, and click on "search." This will bring up the first instance of that location or name in the book. If that does not fit your ancestor, then have it search for the next time that word occurs, and so on until you find your ancestor. If this does not locate your ancestor, then try searching in The Richard Ratcliff Bulletin. Of course don't forget the general search box on the first page of this system.

Revision of Samuel Ratcliff Lineage

After the last edition of the book was printed, Dad re-wrote the section on Samuel Ratcliff's (1J6) descendents. More recently Pauline Brandy has revised and updated this work, correcting some errors and extending the lines considerably.
