(1J3B4) John Ratcliff, Jr., probably born on the family plantation

"RATCLIFF'S CHANCE" near the juncture of Lower Falling Creek and the Neuse

River, about 5 miles west of Kinston, (then Johnston Co.) N. C., 18 July 1756

(114b), d. on Salt Creek, north of Londonderry, Ohio, of a heart attack, 7

Nov 1807, aged 51y 3m 26d, buried Union Cemetery (112a), m. Chatham Co., N.

C., ca 1779, Ruth Ward, a sister of Hannah Ward who m. (1J3B2) Thomas

Ratcliff, brother of this John. (#1028)

Cane Creek MM, Chatham Co., Society of Friends, disowned John for

marrying out of unity, 4 Sept 1779 (102c). Ruth Ward was b. N. C., 29 May

1759, d. Londonderry, Eagle Twp., Ross Co., Ohio, 23 Aug 1805, age 46y 2m

25d, buried beside her husband (101a)(102a)

John, Jr. bought 113 acres of "Cobb Plantation" from his father, (1J3B)

John, Sr. This land was located on Love's Creek & Blood Run, near Siler

City, N. C. Date of sale, 15 Nov 1792, purchase price 30 pounds.

John bought 244 acres other land in Chatham Co. before he started selling

off his holdings preparing to move to Ohio.

John & Ruth (Ward) Ratcliff with all their children and grandchildren

were among a group of some 40 persons, or parts of 14 families, including

some of their neighbors, who left Chatham Co., N. C., 4 Sept 1804.

John & Ruth brought their furniture, two cows and two teams with

covered wagons. The party traveled over the mountains to New River and on to

what is now Charleston, W. Va., where the wagons were taken apart and loaded

on a keel boat and brought to Gallipolis,Ohio, via the Kanawha River, as

there was no road through the forests at that time. Some of the men and

older boys drove the cows and other livestock through and were reunited with

the main group at Gallipolis. There the wagons were reassembled and used for

the rest of the journey. Upon reaching Ross Co., Ohio, John & Ruth and their

family camped for about six weeks near Richmonddale, where some of their N.

C. friends had previously located. Jesse and Joseph Dixon had settled in

Liberty Twp., Ross Co., Ohio, in 1801, and Samuel Dixon came in 1802, so the

Ratcliff's may have stayed with one of them. John's dau, Anne, later married

this Joseph Dixon.

John was not completely satisfied with the are around Richmondale, maybe

because of malaria, the ague, or other fevers being prevalent in that part

of the county at that time, so he took his fanily on to Salt Creek in Eagle

Twp., now Vinton Co., Ohio, but at that time, Ross Co. (111b)(140a)

Shortly after setting up camp on Salt Creek, near where Lebanon Methodist

Church now stands, north of Londonderry, John entered a quarter of a section

of land (160 acres) SE 1/4 of Section 29, Township 10, Range 19, RossCo.,

Ohio. Upon the deaths of John & Ruth their heirs deeded this farm to two of

the younger sons, Ezekiel & Jesse. Ezekiel later sold his share to Jesse,

who kept the old homestead and other land he had bought until he sold out

his entire holdings in 1863, and moved to Whitley Co., Ind. Isaac Timmons

and Finley Dixon purchased Jesse Ratcliff's 330 acres in 1863. At least a

part ofthe old homestead seems to have been owned by the Timmons family

until the present, when it is owned by the McWhorters, who are descendents of

both the Timmons and John & Ruth Ratcliff.

Apparently John and Ruth did not attend the Quaker Church nearby. There

is no record that John ever asked to be reinstated after he was disowned in

1779. (Eagle Mills Church was built in 1879, so they couldn't have gone

there.)

Soon after settling in Eagle Twp., John & Ruth's children found a wild

bear cub out in the woods as they were out after the cows. These young

children brought the cub to the house with them and kept it until it grew up

and got cross and had to be destroyed.

Ratcliff's lived and died in the early l800's. Howard and Ethel had

lived around Londonderry, Ohio, from early childhood, and had heard

many true stories of many early Ohio Ratcliff's, so they could

contact numerous cousins that the writer had no knowledge of. Their

member of the Fairview U. B. Church and was liked by all who knew him.

He leaves a wife and a host of friends to mourn their loss." Simon

Wesley m. (1) McArthur, Ohio, 17 Aug 1866, Margaret Waldren who

probably died at Kenny, Ill., where they moved after their marriage.

After the death of his first wife Simon Wesley returned to Vinton Co.,

military duty in the Civil War. He enlisted at Jackson, Ohio, 16 Aug

1862, as a corporal, Company B, Reg. 73, Ohio Inf. Volunters (123).

At that time he was 17 years old. He was disabled by a gunshot wound and

the heat at Gettysburg, Pa. Battlefield, 3 July 1863. (This writer

visited Gettysburg Military Cem. and Battlefield 3 July 1963, during the

Centennial Celebration.) Simon Wesley also received a gunshot wound in

the left arm at Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, Tenn., in Nov 1864,

and suffered a bronchial infection near Savannah, Ga., in the march

through Ga. with General Sherman in 1864. (This bronchial infection

seems to have bothered him the rest of his life and contributed to his

death from t.b. at 46. Simon Wesley was honorably discharged from the

army at Louisville, Ky., 24 July 1865 (123). From his military records

it appears that Simon Wesley applied for a pension for military

connected disabilities, 22 June 1882, and was denied. He applied again

13 Feb 1892,at which time it must have been granted, as after his death

Hannah applied for a widow's pension and reported that Simon Wesley

Ratcliff had been a pensioner, Certificate # 525.139 (123).

It is thought that John & Ruth (Dixon) Clark gave their dau Sally

(Clark) Ratcliff, 40 acres on Fairview Ridge, Harrison Twp., after the

death of her husband, Ezekiel Ratcliff. It is thought that Sally sold 10

acres to her son, Simon Wesley, and he in turn sold 3 acres to a

neighbor. Hannah sold the house and the remaining 7 acres for $35.00

when she and her minor children moved to Kansas in 1904. Simon Wesley's

civilian occupations were carpenter, farmer and woodsman.

"Grandfsther at one time was considered one of the largest landowners

in that part of Vinton Co. where he lived, just west of Allensville, Ohio,

and along what is now Route 50. He owned more than 500 acres before he

divided his holdings among his children, except the Home Place, which went

to his youngest son, Wm Rufus, who remained at home and farmed the home

place." Submitted by Riley E. Ratcliff (#1651)

"Grandfather owned a wonderful team of Coach Horses thsat he raised

from a Morgan bay mare, named Gin, and bred to a Coach Horse. One was a

very dark blod bay and the other a dapple brown, Old Bill & Charley. They

were always fat and looked like a couple of stallions. Samuel Tucker, the

undertaker, lived in Allensville, made caskets for burial purposes and

owned a horse drawn hearse with a high seat up front. Grandfather arranged

with Mr. Tucker that any time he was called on for a funeral to let grand-

father know and he would bring his team and hitch them to the hearse and

haul the corpse to the cemetery. This was a familiar sight years ago to

see Mr. Tucker and Grandfather sitting up in the high seat and going to

the cemetery. For this service Grandfather refused to allow Mr. Tucker to

make any charge and for a long time this service was rendered to any

neighbor that had Mr. Tucker for the undertaker." Riley E. Ratcliff, 1965.
